About 30 years ago, sea level rise in Florida began accelerating. In 2006, the rate increased again. Now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that sea levels are rising by more than a third of an inch annually along certain parts of the Floridian coast. This rapid rate of sea level rise could lead to 25 times more flooding capable of causing “significant risks to life and property.” Across Southeast Florida, sea level rise is viewed as a “force multiplier”—making natural events and challenges even more severe—and as a reality of daily life. Communities and local government are taking action to adapt and respond to rising seas.
