Office of Resilience Awarded Assistance from the DOE
October 4, 2017
The Miami-Dade County Office of Resilience has been awarded three different technical assistance grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to help with countywide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction efforts.
Increasing energy and water efficiency is a major part of the county’s strategy to reduce GHGs because electricity generation accounts for 46% of the county’s GHG emissions.
- Through the DOE’s Better Communities Alliance, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) will provide assistance with stakeholder engagement presentations to building owners and managers about best practices for energy and water efficiency.
- Through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Community Data Analysis Initiative, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), based in Golden, Colorado, will provide technical assistance to Miami-Dade County by performing a preliminary assessment of County facilities to determine their capacity for generating electricity using solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. This effort is in support of recently adopted Resolution No. R-303-17. The final report, which will be made available to other local governments in the United States to encourage replication, will help County staff prioritize which facilities are the best candidates for follow-on, in-depth economic and feasibility analyses.
- Through the “Analyzing Drivers of Change in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories” project funded by DOE’s Cities Leading through Energy Analysis and Planning program, the county will receive a free Contribution Analysis to help explain trends in GHG emissions inventories and forecast future changes.
