Following the president’s announcement that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris climate accord, about a dozen protesters gathered in Museum Park in downtown Miami, carrying signs reading, “Florida Can’t Wait: Climate Action Now” and “Don’t Drown Homestead.” The protesters view the decision to leave the Paris agreement as a betrayal of regional efforts to adapt to and mitigate climate change and sea level rise. South Florida leaders have taken groundbreaking steps to respond to climate change, including the establishment of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, and activists hope South Florida’s leadership will make it ground zero for reversing the decision to leave the international agreement.
