A rushed response to Hurricane Irma could cause bigger disasters

If planning isn’t done correctly, it could exacerbate future disasters. Though storm tracking allows more people to find safety in the face of severe storms, the financial costs of storm damage are skyrocketing as more valuable infrastructure is being built in high-risk areas. Florida and other at-risk places need stronger building codes, but an engineering approach could make future disasters worst if built defenses make areas look safer than they actually are.
