In the U.S., an estimated 13 million people live along the coast, and the largest concentration—1.5 million people—is in South Florida. Many of the most aggressive ideas for combating sea level rise in the U.S. are coming from Miami and Miami Beach, where elevation—raising roads, sea walls, and buildings—is the most sought-after solution. In Miami Beach, public projects to raise roads are complemented by advances in water pumps and sewer links. Private properties would benefit from raising their elevation, as well—it is much more affordable to raise a building than it is to tear down a flooded structure and rebuild it. Historic structures like stilt houses may serve as models for South Florida’s climate-altered future.
