To respond to rising sea levels and worsening flooding, Miami Beach is embarking on the second stage of a $400-$500 million project to raise the city’s roads and install new pumps. The city began elevating roads in the southern part of Miami Beach in 2013, and will start construction this fall in a residential area of mostly single-family homes. The two-year, $100 million project in the Lakeview neighborhood will raise roads and curbs, replace gutters and water mains, connect the new roadway to existing driveways and reroute excess water back to the ocean using newly installed pumps.
