On March 23, the City of Miami formally joined the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact as a municipal partner with the approval of a resolution sponsored by Mayor Tomás Regalado. The city commissioners also endorsed a climate action pledge and promised to consider implementing the Compact’s Regional Climate Action Plan. Mayor Regalado’s resolution noted that Southeast Florida is at the frontline of the impacts of climate change, especially sea level rise, and that the city must adapt to and mitigate the climate-related threats to the city’s infrastructure, storm surge, public health, insurance rates, potable water supply and socioeconomics. By joining the Compact, the City of Miami has become part of a nonpartisan form of regional climate governance that allows local governments to collaborate across county lines to respond to pressing climate issues.
