Local leaders have worked together since 2012 to share research and case studies on the imminent threat of climate change in a group called the Southeast Florida Climate Change Compact. This year, at the 9th Annual Summit, the Compact focused on the connections between economic, environmental, and community resilience. If the impacts of climate change are left unchecked, there could be serious consequences for Florida’s financial future, particularly because of the state’s dependence on its tourism industry. In a pledge signed at the Summit, Southeast Florida’s economic development community will work with the Compact to market the financial case for resilience. This could allow the region to become a hub for innovation and economic activity related to keeping South Floridians above sea level.
