With hurricane season starting June 1, South Florida officials and activisits are trying to encourage “good neighbors” to be part of hurricane preparation and response efforts in the region. Help from neighbors—like sharing and transporting food, ice, or other supplies—can ensure people are safe and as comfortable as possible after a hurricane hits.

According to City of Miami Chief Resilience Officer Jane Gilbert, “Neighbors who are connected with each other tend to fare better after disasters because they do tend to check in on each other… If they need help—whether it’s getting food or ice, or clearing out trees and debris, or just making sure that someone who’s maybe physically more vulnerable is OK—that’s the first line of defense.”
