Fort Lauderdale is implementing a training program that will help city employees recognize and react to potential climate change effects.

“The idea was to start building capacity within the workforce for understanding what the climate issues are and start working on how we can address these issues and recognizing it needs to be done across all departments,” said Nancy J. Gassman, assistant public works director for the city’s Sustainability Division.

The initial climate change training began last year when 30 staff members were chosen to go through a three-day training provided by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. […]

“Having the workforce trained and informed of the issues raises their awareness, so they can not only respond to these concerns, but recognize when things are changing with the climate,” Gassman said.
