Leaders in Broward County, and elsewhere in South Florida, are working to address a major obstacle in addressing sea level rise in the region: funding. Local governments are faced with a lack of state and federal funding support, and with the prospect of updated federal maps that reflect sea level rise, which could potentially cause spikes in insurance prices that will raise costs for businesses and homeowners and even scare away potential investors. Broward County is readying itself for any potential funding opportunities. More than 40 elected officials, city staff, and business leaders from across the county gathered for a roundtable meeting about addressing sea level rise, part of the county’s broader efforts to put together a comprehensive, collaborative plan that will help the county’s chances of securing federal government funding if it does become available in the future.
